Free regional senior passes: the case of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes
The most interesting initiatives from 2024-2026 do not come from SNCF but from local authorities. The Pass’Région Seniors in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is a perfect example of this trend: it is completely free, with no income conditions, and available to residents of the region from the age of 60.

It includes designated funds usable with local partners: an envelope for purchasing books at partner bookstores, another for entry to certain regional tourist sites, and since September 2026, an additional fund of 15 euros intended to finance a membership in a sports, cultural, or leisure association.
Nine months after its launch, the program already had around 260,000 beneficiaries and over 2,600 local partners. It’s easier to understand why knowing how to obtain a free senior card starts with checking the assistance offered by your own region or municipality.
The application is generally made online, on the website of the relevant local authority, with proof of residence and an identity document. No medical file, no income ceiling in the case of the Pass’Région Seniors.
SNCF Senior Advantage Card: discounts on TGV INOUI and Intercités
The SNCF Senior Advantage Card costs 49 euros per year. It is therefore not free, but confusion persists because some organizations occasionally offer it at a reduced price or as a gift.
What the card actually covers
